Black History Celebration
Each February we decorate the church for Black History Month. The crown jewel of the month is our Black History Celebration, on the third Sunday of February at 5:00 PM, followed by a soul-food dinner at 6:30 PM. One of the highlights of our church year, this celebration is attended by many in the community, including civic and public leaders.
Vacation Bible School (VBS):
Each summer we provide a week-long VBS for our community. Children (ages K-8th grade) adventure together in a themed day camp (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM). Groups move through different stations throughout the morning: Opening Assembly, Music, Bible Story, Recreation, Missions, Crafts. This program also offers good mentoring in leadership to high schoolers and young adults.
ABC’s Food Distribution:
Every week we host a food distribution for our neighborhood. As a Neighborhood Shares Partner of Trader Joe’s, we receive their about-to-be expired food, and distribute it free to people in our area who live on fixed incomes, and have need of it. Last year we distributed over $200,000 of food.
Altadena Food Pantry:
In cooperation with several Altadena congregations, for decades we have staffed and supplied the Altadena Food Pantry, open every Saturday from 10:00 AM – Noon, housed at Altadena Community Church, 943 E Altadena Dr, Altadena.
Pasadena Bad Weather Shelter:
Since it was opened to volunteers in 1987, we have helped the unhoused in our area by volunteering and bringing food to our local winter shelter on our designated day. The season lasts from November through March. The shelter is weather activated.
Altadena Congregations Together Serving (ACTS):
We cooperate with several interfaith congregations in Altadena, pooling our resources to make a greater impact. We host Summer Salad Suppers, in order to build friendship and understanding across religious lines. We host a yearly Thanksgiving Service. We cooperate to improve the well-being of our unhoused neighbors.
Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Pasadena (IMA):
Our pastor has been a faithful member of this predominantly Black group of ministers for more than fifty years. We support this group’s community leadership, its social justice activism and its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholarship Fund for high school graduates.
Altadena Pride:
Since we are open and affirming to all sincere seekers, including those who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, we fully cooperate with this fairly new Altadena event, the Community Walk. We plan to participate in the planning in the group’s future initiatives toward bringing the entire Altadena community together.
